Lawyers set up buddy scheme to help elderly during coronavirus isolation

Press release from 19 March 2020

Staff from law firm Furley Page have set up a telephone buddy system to offer companionship and support to elderly members of the community who need to self-isolate due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Lawyers Val Prosser and Melanie Christodoulou, who are the regional co-ordinators for Re-engage, have set up the phone service following the recent postponement of the charity’s monthly tea parties.

Val Prosser, Senior Associate at Furley Page and co-ordinator of Re-engage Whitstable and Herne Bay, said: “Many elderly people in the community are understandably anxious about the potential impact of the coronavirus and the impact that a long period of isolation will have on their mental wellbeing.

“The telephone buddy system helps to alleviate social isolation and ensure that no-one is struggling at home alone, without essential food and medication. It will provide welcome regular contact for elderly citizens who are isolated and enable our volunteers to check that they are OK and arrange any help or support they may require during this difficult time.”

Furley Page’s Senior Associate Melanie Christodoulou, who co-ordinates the Re-engage’s Canterbury group, said: “The buddy scheme is not just for current members of our group and we intend to offer our assistance to all elderly and vulnerable people in the local community who are isolated as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

“Staff members at Furley Page have offered to help elderly people with their shopping or other tasks, such as collecting medication. I would urge anyone who needs help to please contact us, as we are working to provide as much support as possible for older people in our community.

Re-engage is the only charity solely committed to tackling the problem of social isolation, by helping older people to re-connect with their communities through regular face-to-face contact.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer of Re-engage for the Whitstable, Herne Bay or Canterbury groups please contact Val Prosser or Melanie Christodoulou at Furley Page on 01227 763939.
