Petition to increase mileage rates for volunteers

Canterbury District Volunteer Centre have been running a Social Transport scheme taking predominantly older people to medical and social appointments, across the district and beyond, for many years.  This service utilizes volunteer drivers who use their own cars to undertake these journeys.  Due to the current relentless increase in fuel costs, this is directly impacting on the Centre’s ability to both retain and recruit new drivers and therefore cater for the ever-increasing demand for our services. . .we have just taken the decision to close our books to new clients  due to the lack of drivers!

The volunteer drivers are currently reimbursed for these journeys at a HM Treasury mileage rate of 45p per mile plus 5p per passenger.  This mileage rate has been at this rate since 2011 – The lack of any increase since then is a serious disincentive to volunteer drivers particularly at present and also has an impact such as freeing up hospital beds and keeping people independent and in their own homes, decreasing social isolation and loneliness and the stress and anxiety felt by people generally.

Please help us to get a better deal for volunteer drivers by signing this petition:
